Well, let me tell ya ’bout that there Alabama football team back in ’73. Them boys, they were somethin’ else, lemme tell ya. Folks ’round here still talk about ’em.
The 1973 Alabama Football Roster – A Bunch of Tough Boys
Now, I ain’t got no fancy stats or nothin’, but I know they were good. Real good. They won and won and won. Heard tell they had fellers like Buddy Brown, that big ol’ tackle, and Woodrow Lowe, a linebacker meaner than a hornet. And that Wayne Wheeler, he could catch a ball like nobody’s business. Yep, those boys were the real deal.
- Buddy Brown – Tough as nails, they say. Wouldn’t budge an inch.
- Woodrow Lowe – Faster than a greased pig, and hit harder too.
- Wayne Wheeler – Hands like glue, that feller.
They had a whole mess of other good players, but those are the ones folks always talkin’ about. They was all part of somethin’ special, that’s for sure. That ’73 team, they went and won eleven games! Can you believe that? Eleven games! Ain’t nobody done that ’round here in a long time, not like them boys did.
Undefeated Until the Very End, Almost
They was undefeated, you know. Went through the whole season without losin’ a single game. Beat everybody they played. Folks was gettin’ real excited, thinkin’ they was gonna win it all. They was talkin’ ’bout a national championship and all that fancy stuff. But then… well, then came that Sugar Bowl game against Notre Dame.
That Notre Dame team, they was tough too. Real tough. It was a close game, a real nail-biter, they say. Back and forth, back and forth. Our boys, they fought hard, they really did. But in the end, they lost. Lost by just one little point, 24 to 23. Broke everybody’s hearts, it did. One measly point!
A Season to Remember, Even With the Loss
But even though they lost that last game, folks ’round here still remember that ’73 team. They was special. They showed everybody what Alabama football was all about: toughness, grit, and a whole lotta heart. They played hard, every single game. They made us proud, even when they lost. It was somethin’ to see, let me tell ya.
Alabama Football History and the 1973 Season
Now, I ain’t no expert on football history or nothin’, but I know that ’73 team is a big part of Alabama football history. They’re right up there with the best of ’em. Folks still talk about ’em, still tell stories about ’em. And that’s how you know they was somethin’ special. They say they played in Birmingham against California and won. Then they just kept on winnin’. Beat everybody in the SEC, they did. Eight wins in the conference, nobody could touch ’em.
More Than Just Football Players
And it wasn’t just about football, you know. Them boys, they was good kids too. Respected their elders, worked hard in school, and represented Alabama real well. That’s what matters, you see. It ain’t just about winnin’ games, it’s about bein’ good people too. And those boys, they was good people. That’s why folks ’round here loved ’em so much.
The Legacy of the 1973 Alabama Football Team
So, yeah, that 1973 Alabama football team. They were a bunch of tough, talented boys who almost went all the way. They might not have won the national championship, but they won our hearts. And that’s what matters most. They left a legacy, they did. A legacy of hard work, determination, and good ol’ fashioned Alabama football. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
I tell ya, if you ever get a chance to talk to somebody who saw them boys play, you do it. You listen to their stories. ‘Cause them stories, they’re a part of Alabama history. And they’re stories worth tellin’. They was 11-1 overall, and that one loss still stings a bit, but eleven wins, that’s something to brag about.
So there you have it. That’s what I know about that ’73 Alabama football team. Not much, maybe, but it’s the truth, as best as I can remember it. They were a great bunch of boys, and they made us all proud.
