Okay, so, today I’m gonna talk about Steve Stricker’s WITB irons, ’cause I got curious and wanted to see if I could play like him, even just a little bit. I mean, the guy’s a legend on the course, right?
First off, I went down a rabbit hole researching what irons Steve actually uses. Turns out, he’s got these Callaway Apex MB irons in his bag. They look slick, but they’re also, like, serious clubs for serious players. I’m not exactly a pro, but I figured, why not give it a shot? It is kind of challenging to me.
So, I got my hands on a set. Borrowed them from a buddy who’s way better at golf than I am. Let me tell you, these things felt different right away. The weight, the balance, everything just screamed “precision.” Which, you know, is a little intimidating when you’re used to more forgiving clubs. I started by just hitting some balls at the driving range. Took a while to get used to the feel. I was shanking shots left and right, hitting them thin, hitting them fat, it was a mess, honestly. But, I kept at it.
My Practice
- First Day: Total disaster. Could barely make decent contact. Felt like I was swinging a sledgehammer.
- Second Day: Started to get a feel for the weight. Still inconsistent, but a few good shots in there.
- Third Day: Okay, now we’re talking. Started to find the sweet spot more often. The ball flight was definitely lower and more penetrating than what I’m used to.
After a few range sessions, I felt brave enough to take them out on the course. Played a full 18, just me and these Apex MBs. And… it was a humbling experience. My score wasn’t pretty. I missed a lot of greens, and my short game suffered ’cause I wasn’t used to the way these irons launched the ball. But, man, when I did hit one pure, it felt amazing. Like, butter. The ball just jumped off the face and flew exactly where I wanted it to go. The feeling is so great, isn’t it? It is not easy but the feeling is quite attracting.
So, what did I learn from my little experiment? Well, Steve Stricker’s irons are no joke. They’re designed for players who can consistently strike the ball in the center of the face. I’m not quite there yet, but I can see the appeal. These irons reward good swings with incredible feel and control. But they also punish bad swings without mercy.
Am I going to switch to these irons permanently? Probably not. At least not yet. I need a lot more practice before I’m ready for that kind of commitment. But I’m definitely going to keep working with them, trying to improve my ball-striking. Maybe one day I’ll be able to play them like Steve. Okay, a guy can dream, right?
Anyway, that’s my story. Hope you enjoyed it. If you’ve ever tried out Steve Stricker’s irons, let me know how it went for you. I’m curious to hear other people’s experiences.
