Alright, so today I decided to dive into the player ratings from the match between 1. FC Heidenheim and Borussia Dortmund. I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about this game online, and I figured, why not do my own little analysis?

First things first, I needed to actually watch the game or find extensive highlights. Thankfully, I already saw most of the game live, but I grabbed some additional replays to refresh some point. I made notes on my observations for each player’s performance.
Next up, I started looking at some of the usual football news sites. Scoped their ratings, read through their match reports, just to get a feel for what the “experts” were saying. I wanted to see if my own observations were the same.
Then, the real work began. I created a simple spreadsheet. One column for the player names, another for my rating, and a third for some quick notes justifying my score. I wanted to keep my ratings easy, so I’m going with a standard 1-10 scale, nothing too fancy.
- 1-3: Pretty awful performance, maybe even contributed to a loss.
- 4-5: Below average, needs improvement.
- 6: Okay, did the job, nothing special.
- 7-8: Good performance, noticeably contributed to the team.
- 9-10: Exceptional, standout player, potentially Man of the Match material.
I methodically went through my notes player by player. I tried to be as objective as possible, but of course, it’s always a bit subjective, right? I mean, it’s football – we all have our biases!
After filling out my spreadsheet, I compared my ratings to those I found online. Some were pretty close, others were way off. It’s always interesting to see the different perspectives.

Key Observations and Ponderings
I noticed that how the midfield controlled the game was a big factor for me. Those guys connecting the defense and attack really dictate the pace. Also, I give a lot of weight to players who make noticeable efforts, even if they don’t always pay off. Someone who’s constantly working hard, pressing the opponent, that’s worth something in my book, even if they don’t score a goal.
In the end, this whole exercise was more for fun than anything else. It’s just my take on the game, and your mileage may vary. It is great to make records for your own observation.
