Okay, so the other day I got into this whole thing about figuring out the average size of running backs in the NFL. It started with just a random thought, you know, like how big are these guys really? So, I decided to dive in and find out.

Getting Started: Finding the Data
First things first, I needed data. I figured the best place to start was probably the official NFL website, or maybe some sports stats sites. I started poking around, just Googling stuff like “NFL player stats” and “running back sizes.” It took a bit of clicking around, but I eventually landed on a couple of sites that seemed pretty reliable and had the info I needed. I love how you can find so much by just simply search with a few words!
Wrangling the Numbers: Time for a Spreadsheet
Once I found a good source, it was time to get organized. I’m a big fan of spreadsheets for this kind of thing, they were made to organize stuff like this, so, I created a new one and started copying over the data. I made columns for player names, height, and weight. It was a bit tedious, copying and pasting all those numbers, but hey, that’s part of the process! I also chose players from a variety of teams so my results can be as real as possible.
Doing the Math: Averages Time
With all the data nicely laid out, it was time for some simple math. I used the spreadsheet’s built-in functions to calculate the average height and weight. Here were the simple steps I took to getting to my result:
- For Height: Add up all the heights, then divide by the number of players.
- For Weight: Add up all the weights, then divide by the number of players.
Boom! Just like that, I had the average height and weight for NFL running backs. Seeing that final number was pretty satisfying.
Checking My Work: Does This Make Sense?
After I got the average, I did a quick reality check. Does this number seem right? I compared it to some of the individual player stats I had, and it seemed to be in the right ballpark. It’s always good to do a little sanity check to make sure you haven’t made any huge errors along the way, you know? I’ve made plenty of errors in my day.

And that’s it! That’s how I spent an afternoon figuring out the average size of an NFL running back. It was a fun little project, and I learned something new. I might do this whole research project again with other positions!
