Okay, so I saw this trend going around about Jimmy Butler’s new dreads, and I was like, “I gotta try this.” I mean, his hair looks pretty cool, and I’ve always wanted to experiment a bit. I do not have hair as long as his, so I knew it would be somewhat different.

First things first, I washed my hair. Gotta start with a clean slate, you know? Then I parted it into small sections. The size really depends on how thick you want the dreads to be. I went for kinda medium-sized ones, I guess.
The Twisting Begins
Next, the real work started. I took each section and started twisting it, from the root all the way down. Now, I’m not gonna lie, this took FOREVER. My arms were getting tired, and my fingers were starting to cramp up. But I kept going, determined to see this through.
- Twist, twist, twist. That’s basically all I did.
- Sometimes, I’d use a little bit of hair wax to help hold the twist together, especially at the ends.
After what felt like an eternity, I finally finished twisting all the sections. At the moment, I look like a very messy Medusa, with all these twists sticking out everywhere. It was not cute, haha.
Palm Rolling and Patience
Now comes the palm rolling. I took each twist and rolled it between my palms, back and forth, to help it lock up and form a more solid dread. This part was also super time-consuming, but it’s crucial for getting that dreadlock look.
Honestly, the whole process was way more work than I expected. I have a whole new level of respect for people with dreadlocks now. It’s a commitment, that’s for sure!
So, now I’m in the “baby dreads” phase. They’re still pretty fuzzy and loose, but I can see the potential. I’ll have to keep palm rolling them regularly and just be patient. Apparently, it can take months, even years, for dreads to fully mature.
I’ll keep you guys updated on the progress. Wish me luck on this hair journey!
