Okay, so I was watching the 49ers game the other day, and I kept noticing this “64” sticker on the back of their helmets. I was like, “What’s that all about?” I mean, I’m a pretty big fan, but I’m not up on every little detail, you know?
So, first thing I did was grab my phone and started Googling. Just a simple search, something like “49ers helmet 64”.
Digging a Little Deeper
The initial results pointed me to articles about a former player. I skimmed through a couple of quick news pieces and some fan forum discussions.
I learned the “64” is there to honor a former 49ers player, a guy named Dave Wilcox. Apprently, this guy Wilcox was a linebacker. And he played for the 49ers from 1964 to 1974, which is a pretty good run.
- Played outside linebacker.
- Part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2000.
- Nickname is “The Intimidator”.
- Seven Pro Bowls selections.
It all made total sense then! It’s a cool way to remember a legend. Glad I took a few minutes to look it up. Now, I can sound like a super-fan when I’m talking about it with my friends. I can say”You know that is a way to remeber a legendary player, right?” I bet it’s gonna make me a expert.
