Alright, so I got this bug in my ear a while back, thought I’d try my hand at figuring out the World Series winner beforehand. Seemed like a fun little project, you know, something to chew on.

First off, I just started poking around online. Didn’t get too crazy, just looked at the main teams, who was hot, who wasn’t. You see all the usual stats flying around – batting averages, pitcher wins, ERA, all that jazz. I figured, okay, maybe there’s a pattern.
Getting Hands Dirty
So, I grabbed a notebook. Yeah, old school. Started jotting down the top contenders. I looked at their regular season records, how they finished the year. Did they limp into the playoffs or storm in?
Things I looked at included:
- Team Wins/Losses (obviously)
- Recent performance (last month or so)
- Key player injuries (this one’s a killer)
- Head-to-head records if they played each other
I spent a good few evenings just comparing numbers, trying to weigh who had the edge. You look at Team A, solid pitching. Then Team B, man, they could hit anything. It started getting complicated real fast. You think you find something, then you see an exception. A team gets hot out of nowhere, a star player slumps.
I tried making a simple system. Give points for pitching, points for hitting, maybe points for ‘momentum’. Sounded good in my head, but putting it down on paper, it felt kinda flimsy. There’s just so much stuff you can’t really measure, like team chemistry or just plain old luck.

The Big ‘Prediction’
After staring at my notes until my eyes crossed, I finally just picked one. Honestly? It was partly the numbers, but mostly a gut feeling. One team just sort of felt like they had the right mix, the right story building up. I wrote the name down, feeling pretty smart for about five minutes.
And then the playoffs actually started. My ‘chosen one’? Yeah, they didn’t make it very far. Got bounced earlier than I expected. Watched the team I almost picked go all the way instead. Figures, right?
So, what did I learn from this little exercise? Mostly that predicting baseball is tough sledding. Maybe impossible, at least for a regular guy like me just messing around with basic stats. There are way too many things happening on and off the field. Injuries, a lucky bounce, a bad call – it can turn everything upside down.
It was interesting digging into it, though. Made watching the games a bit different, paying attention to things I normally wouldn’t. But yeah, think I’ll stick to just enjoying the games next year, leave the predicting to the folks who get paid for it. Or maybe I’ll just flip a coin.
