Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya ’bout this thing called the “yearly record nyt crossword.” Don’t go gettin’ all fancy on me, it ain’t nothin’ complicated. It’s just one of them word puzzles they put in that there New York Times paper. Folks do ’em every day, ya know, to keep their brains from turnin’ to mush, I reckon.

Now, this crossword ain’t always the same. Some smart fella, Will Shortz they call him, he’s been in charge of it since back in ’93. He gets other folks to make up the puzzles. And they ain’t playin’ around, no sir! They make ’em harder and harder as the week goes on. Monday’s is easy peasy, like shellin’ peas. But by Saturday, you’ll be scratchin’ your head ’til your hair falls out! I tell ya, some of them words, I ain’t never heard of ’em in all my born days.

- Tuesday: Still pretty simple.
- Wednesday: Startin’ to get tricky.
- Thursday: Now you gotta think a bit.
- Friday: Tough as nails.
- Saturday: Lord have mercy, it’s a brain buster!
So, what’s this “yearly record” part mean?
Well, sometimes they put clues in the crossword, and “yearly record” is one of ’em. It’s like they’re askin’ ya, “What do you call somethin’ that happens every year?” Or maybe they want a word that means a record of somethin’ over a year. See? It ain’t rocket science. They just like to play with words, them city folk.
I heard tell there was a “yearly record” clue just this past January, on the 24th to be exact. And folks, they went lookin’ for the answer, just like huntin’ for buried treasure. Seems like the answer was only one word long that time. But then in November, on the 17th, they had a clue that sounded kinda similar, “Record of the Year.” This time, there were two answers! See, that’s how they get ya. They change things up, keep ya on your toes.

Now, I ain’t no expert, but I heard tell the only way to get good at these crosswords is to do a whole mess of ’em. Just keep at it, like hoein’ a field. You gotta do it every day, make it part of your routine, like milkin’ the cows or feedin’ the chickens. The more you do, the better you get. That’s what they say, anyways.

Well, I ain’t seen it myself, but they say it’s in that there New York Times paper. You know, the one them fancy city folk read. And I hear tell you can even get it on your phone now! Imagine that, a whole newspaper on a little bitty screen. What will they think of next? They even got games on it now! That’s somethin’ isn’t it?
So, why do folks bother with these crosswords?
Beats me! But I guess it keeps their minds sharp, like I said. Maybe it’s like exercisin’ your brain, kinda like how choppin’ wood keeps your muscles strong. And maybe it’s just fun for ’em, somethin’ to do while they’re sittin’ on the porch, sippin’ their sweet tea. Who am I to judge? To each their own, I always say.
