Alright, let’s talk about this fella, Trevino Lee. Don’t know much about fancy golf talk, but I heard tell he’s a big deal, one of them best ever, you know?
Who’s this Trevino Lee, anyway?
Well, from what I gather, this Trevino fella, he ain’t no spring chicken. Born way back in 1939, that’s a long time ago. He’s American, you know, from Texas. Grew up kinda rough, not with a silver spoon in his mouth, that’s for sure. His mama and grandpa, they raised him. Grandpa dug graves for a livin’, can you believe it? Hard workin’ folk, just like us. And this Trevino, he went on to become a real big shot golfer.
What’s he done, this golfin’ fella?
They say he won a whole bunch of golf games, major championships they call ‘em. Six of ‘em! And other games too, like 29 of them PGA Tour things. Sounds like a lot, right? They even put him in some fancy Hall of Fame in 1981. Must be somethin’ special, that Hall of Fame. Made a pretty penny too, almost 10 million dollars just from playin’ golf. That’s more money than I ever seen in my whole life!
- Won six major championships. That’s a lot, even for someone who don’t know golf.
- Won 29 PGA Tour events. Guess that’s like winnin’ the county fair, but bigger.
- Got into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981. Sounds fancy.
- Made almost 10 million dollars playin’ golf. Enough to buy a whole lotta chickens!
More than just swingin’ sticks.
This fella Trevino, he ain’t just about hittin’ balls. Heard he was in the Marines too. Servin’ his country, that’s somethin’ to be proud of. And he had to work hard for everything he got. Wasn’t born rich, you know? Had to overcome a lot of tough times, just like us. They even made a movie about him, a documentary they call it. 48 minutes long, talkin’ about his life. Guess he’s got quite the story to tell.
He’s got some tricks up his sleeve too.
Now, I don’t understand all this golf talk, but they say Trevino, he was real clever on the course. Knew how to hit the ball in all sorts of ways. They talk about somethin’ called a “bump-and-run” shot. Sounds like somethin’ you’d do with a car, not a golf ball! But apparently, it’s a way to hit the ball when the weather’s bad or somethin’. Smart fella, this Trevino. He even played tricks on other golfers, like this fella Jack Nicklaus. Used roses to keep him from playin’ too much! Sounds like a sneaky one, but in a good way, I guess.
And what’s he doin’ now?
Well, he’s retired now, ain’t playin’ golf professionally no more. But he still talks about it, tells stories. He was even in Punta Mita recently, that’s in Mexico I think. Still involved in the golf world, I reckon. And he talks about how he didn’t even learn to speak Spanish till he moved to El Paso in 1965. Imagine that! Texan fella not speakin’ Spanish ’til later in life.
So, what’s the big deal about Trevino Lee?
Well, seems to me, this Trevino fella, he’s more than just a golfer. He’s a fella who worked hard, overcame hardship, and made somethin’ of himself. He’s a winner, that’s for sure. And he’s got a story that’s worth tellin’. He represents good old American values, work hard and you can get ahead. Reminds me of us, you know? Just regular folks tryin’ to make our way in the world. That’s why I think this Trevino Lee, he’s a pretty good fella to look up to, even if you don’t know a thing about golf.
And that’s all I gotta say about that.
