Alright, listen up, y’all. Let’s talk about this KU vs. MU football thing, or whatever they call it, the “Border Showdown” or some such nonsense. I don’t know much about fancy football, but I know a good fight when I see one, and seems like these two teams been at it for a good long while, even before I was born, I reckon.
Them boys been fightin’ longer than I can remember. They say it goes all the way back to some war, Civil War they call it. Guess them boys couldn’t settle their differences then, and they still can’t now, not on the football field anyways. They used to play each other every year, then stopped for a spell, somethin’ about conferences and such. Sounded like a bunch of hogwash to me. Now they gonna start up again, which is good, I guess. Folks like a good rivalry.
Now, I hear tell they’re gonna play a few games, starting in 2025 and then again in 2031. That’s a long ways off, but time flies when you’re gettin’ old like me. They’ll be playin’ in Columbia, Missouri, which is where them Tigers hang their hats, I hear. Don’t know much about them Tigers, but they sound fierce enough.
- KU stands for Kansas somethin’, and them fellers is called the Jayhawks. Sounds like a bird, don’t it? Maybe they fly around real fast on that field.
- MU is Missouri, and them’s the Tigers. Tigers are mean, so maybe they do more clawin’ and bitin’ than flyin’.
This whole thing, this “Border Showdown,” it ain’t just about football, you know? It’s about somethin’ more, somethin’ deep-down. It’s like them two states, Kansas and Missouri, they just can’t agree on nothin’. Always gotta be one-uppin’ the other. Like my grandkids, always fightin’ over the last piece of pie.
I saw on the TV, they got all these fancy numbers and records about who won and who lost and all that. Wins-pedia they called it, or some such. Sounded like a whole lotta mumbo jumbo to me. All I care about is who wins when they play, who’s got more grit, who wants it more. That’s what matters, ain’t it?
Seems like they play in other things too, like basketball. Can’t keep up with all of it, myself. But it’s all part of the same thing, this big fight between them two states. And folks get all riled up about it, wearin’ their colors and yellin’ and hollerin’. It’s somethin’ to see, even if you don’t understand all the rules of the game.
I reckon it’s good to have a rival, someone to push ya, to make ya better. Even if it means a little bit of fussin’ and fightin’ along the way. Just like my ol’ man used to say, “Iron sharpens iron.” Maybe that’s what this KU vs. MU thing is all about, sharpenin’ each other up, makin’ each other stronger.
So, when they finally play again, I might just tune in, see what all the fuss is about. Maybe I’ll even pick a side, though I ain’t got no dog in this fight, as they say. But I do like a good underdog, and seems to me like whoever’s playin’ against them Tigers is usually the underdog. We’ll see who comes out on top. It’ll be a hoot, that’s for sure.
At the end of the day, it’s just a game. But it’s a game that means a lot to folks, and that’s somethin’ special. It brings people together, even if they’re on different sides. And that’s a good thing, I reckon. Even if they do end up with a few bumps and bruises along the way.
So there ya have it. That’s my take on this KU vs. MU football thing. Not much, I know. But it’s what this old woman thinks. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my biscuits.
