Well, I heard on the radio this morning, they talking about the NY Yankees game. Seems like that rain, it just won’t quit! They say it’s a rain delay again. My grandson, he loves that baseball. He always watch those Yankees. That’s all he talks about. He’s gonna be sad about the rain delay.
That Yankee Stadium, they say it’s a real fancy place. I seen it on the TV. Lots of people there. They all wearing the same shirts and hats, blue and white. Cheering and yelling and carrying on. I guess they like baseball too. But with this rain delay, ain’t nobody cheering now. Just waiting and waiting.
Last time it rained like this, they was playing the Blue Jays, I think. Or maybe it was the Red Sox? I get those teams mixed up. All I know is, they had to stop playing. Everybody just sat there. Some folks, they got up and went home. Some folks, they just stayed. Sat there getting wet! Silly folks. I wouldn’t do that for no baseball game. They waited a long time for that game to start again that night. Seems like it was in the paper.
They say there was a big storm. Lots of thunder and lightning. Scary stuff! I don’t like storms. Makes me think the world’s ending. But them baseball folks, they don’t care. They just want to play their game. Even if the Yankee Stadium is flooded. They need to make sure they fix any leaks at that Yankee Stadium before they play.
One time, the game was stopped when they were losing. They was playing the Angels. I think it was that team. My grandson told me that the game was “bagged.” It was a rain delay, that much I know. He seemed happy. But that’s because they were losing real bad. He said it meant the game didn’t count. I don’t understand it. Baseball has too many rules. Why not just play in the rain like kids do?
And that TV, they don’t always show the NY Yankees games. They talking about blackout. I don’t know about those things. Blackout means no power. My grandson, he says it’s ’cause of the TV people. They don’t want to show the games everywhere. It is all confusing to me. I just tell him, we didn’t have this trouble when I was young. We just went outside and played, no matter the weather. Unless it was a real bad storm like that one a few weeks ago. That was a doozy!
- NY Yankees always getting rain delay.
- Yankee Stadium is big and full of people.
- Rain makes everyone wait.
- Sometimes the game just stops, and they don’t count it.
- TV don’t always show the games. Blackout.
I remember one time, it rained so hard, the whole field was like a lake! They had this big sheet, a tarp, they call it. They put it over the field. Like a big blanket. But the rain, it just kept coming. And those players, they just sat in their little rooms. They call it a dugout. They wait and wait for the rain delay to stop. Probably eating sunflower seeds and spitting. That’s what my grandson does when he plays.
They got people at that Yankee Stadium, they tell you when the game will start again. They say they got these fancy machines, radar, they call it. It can see the rain coming. I don’t know about that. Seems like magic to me. But they say it helps them know when the rain delay will end. Sometimes they’re right, sometimes they’re wrong. Just like the weatherman on TV.
My grandson, he gets all excited when they say the rain delay is over. He jumps up and down, like a little rabbit. He loves those NY Yankees. Me, I just shake my head. It’s just a game. But he’s happy, so that’s all that matters. I guess he will be excited when they start playing again after this rain delay.
I hope they get to play soon. My grandson, he’s been waiting all day. He keeps looking out the window, checking the sky. He even tried to use that radar thing on his phone. Kids these days and their phones. They think they can do anything with them. I told him, just be patient. The rain will stop eventually. That’s what happens with a rain delay. You just wait.
I remember one time, when I was a little girl, we didn’t have no fancy stadiums or tarps or radar. We just played in the field. Rain or shine. We made our own bases out of old sacks. And our bats, they were just sticks we found in the woods. We didn’t need no NY Yankees or Yankee Stadium to have fun. But it is nice to see people enjoy it. All that excitement. Even if there is a rain delay, they still love it.
Maybe I’ll ask my grandson to take me to a game sometime. See what all the fuss is about. I’ll wear my best hat. And maybe I’ll even cheer a little. But if it starts to rain, I’m going home. I ain’t waiting around for no rain delay. I got better things to do. Like bake a pie. Or maybe just sit on the porch and watch the world go by. That’s good enough for me. But I’ll make sure he gets to watch his NY Yankees, even if they have to wait out another rain delay.
