This here talk is ’bout them white defensive backs. Ain’t many of ’em, like findin’ a needle in a haystack, ya know? But they’s out there, playin’ their hearts out just like everybody else.
Now, folks say cornerback, that’s the hardest spot on the whole dang field. Gotta be quick on your feet, gotta be able to read them quarterbacks like a book. And them receivers, they fast as greased lightnin’.
White Cornerbacks? Where They At?
Yeah, that’s a thing people talk about. Why ain’t there more white boys playin’ cornerback in the NFL? Some say it’s ’cause they ain’t got the right kinda fast. Some say they is built different. They say it’s just the way things are, some people are just made for it, and some people are not.
- They say white boys are better at other positions.
- Like them defensive end, or them wide receivers.
- But cornerback? That’s a whole different ball game.
- But it’s just the way things is, I reckon.
But I seen some, I tell ya. There was this one fella, Jason Sehorn, played for the Giants. He was good, real good. Fast, strong, could jump like a deer. He was the only white cornerback in the whole NFL for a bit, he was that good. He showed ’em all that it ain’t about the color of your skin, it’s about the fire in your belly.
Cooper DeJean, A New Hope
And now, there’s this new kid, Cooper DeJean. Eagles just got him. Folks say he’s got potential, that he could be somethin’ special. He’s a white cornerback, playin’ in the big leagues. He is showin’ everyone that it can be done.
This Cooper, he’s makin’ history. Reminds me of that Jason Sehorn. Maybe this young fella will change how people see things.
It ain’t easy, though. People gonna talk, they gonna say things. They gonna say he ain’t fast enough, ain’t strong enough. They gonna say he don’t belong. But he just gotta keep his head down, keep workin’ hard, and prove ’em all wrong. Like that Jason Sehorn did.
What’s the Difference? Safeties and Cornerbacks
Now, there’s these cornerbacks, they play closer to them sidelines. Their job is to stick to them wide receivers like glue. Then there’s the safeties, they play further back. They’re like the last line of defense, like the goalie in a hockey game.
And wouldn’t ya know it, there seems to be more white fellas playin’ safety. Maybe it just how things is.
Someone told me ’bout this fella, Moss. They said he got an interception, first white cornerback to do that since Jason Sehorn. He’s makin’ history, that’s what they said. I think that is something good.
Some folks they say that this is just how things is. That people are just made different. It don’t matter if you is white, black, green, or purple. If you is good, you is good.
Why So Few?
People always wonderin’ why there ain’t more white cornerbacks. They say maybe white players is thought of not being fast enough or quick enough to be good at cornerback. So maybe young white players, they don’t even try for that spot. They go for other positions instead.
It’s like when folks say a girl can’t be a mechanic. It ain’t true, but if enough people say it, some girls might start believin’ it. It’s the same thing with them white cornerbacks. If enough people say they can’t do it, maybe they start believin’ it themselves.
But it ain’t right, I tell ya. Anybody can do anything if they put their mind to it. It don’t matter what color your skin is, or where you come from. If you got the heart, and the grit, and the determination, you can do anything.
It’s About Heart, Not Color
This whole thing, it reminds me of that movie ’bout them Tuskegee Airmen. They was black pilots in the war, and folks said they couldn’t do it. But they showed ’em all. They was some of the best pilots in the whole dang war.
So, this here’s a lesson for all of us. Don’t let nobody tell you what you can and can’t do. Don’t let nobody put you in a box. You go out there and you show ’em what you’re made of. Just like them white cornerbacks, fightin’ for their spot on the field.
It ain’t ’bout the color of your skin. It’s about the size of your heart. And these white defensive backs, they got heart, I tell ya. They got heart.
This game is for everyone, it don’t matter if you is white, black or anything else. If you is good at football, then you is good at football. It is that simple. If you can play, you can play, and no one can say any different.
