Well now, if we’re talkin’ about the best quarterbacks the Chicago Bears ever had, let me tell ya, there’s been a lot of ’em come through the ol’ team. Some real good ones, and some, well, not so much. But, if we’re gonna look at the best of the best, you gotta think about a few names that just stand out. Bears fans might argue till they’re blue in the face, but I reckon these fellas got the chops.
First up, there’s Sid Luckman. Now, you might not know this, but Sid was the real deal back in the day, all the way back from 1939 to 1950. You gotta remember, football back then wasn’t like it is now with all them fancy passes and plays. Sid did a lot with not much, and he led the Bears to four championships, which is somethin’ special. He could throw the ball like nobody else, and those Bears teams, well, they knew how to win. Now, I ain’t sayin’ that makes him the best forever, but it sure makes him one of the greatest.
Then there’s Jay Cutler. Now, I know some folks got mixed feelings about Jay. He was with the Bears for a good long while, from 2009 to 2016, and let me tell you, the man could sling that ball. He threw over 23,000 yards, which is mighty impressive for any quarterback, let alone one who played for the Bears, where we’ve had our fair share of struggles at the position. Jay had a cannon for an arm, but sometimes, well, he wasn’t always the most consistent. Still, when you look at the numbers, you can’t ignore his place in Bears history.
Don’t forget about Jim McMahon, now. The man might’ve been a little wild, but he sure got the job done. He was the quarterback when the Bears finally won the Super Bowl in 1985, and if that ain’t enough to put him on the list, I don’t know what is! He wasn’t the flashiest, but he had that leadership and grit that the Bears loved. When it came down to it, Jim knew how to win, and that Super Bowl title means more than any fancy stats could show.
Now, some folks might bring up Johnny Lujack. He played back in the 1940s, and his best seasons still hold some records with the Bears. He threw for a bunch of yards, even got himself a place in Bears history with some records that lasted for years. It’s a shame we don’t hear more about him, but there’s no doubt that Lujack was one of the best quarterbacks to wear the uniform, even if he played in a different era.
And then there’s Mike Tomczak, who was around in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Mike might not have been the flashiest fella either, but he got things done and has the most wins by a Bears quarterback in both the regular season and the playoffs. He wasn’t the star of the show, but he was steady and reliable, which is somethin’ the Bears could always use.
Now, I gotta mention Rudy Bukich, too. He played a long time for the Bears, from 1959 all the way through to the ‘60s. He might not have gotten the glory of some others, but he was solid. He didn’t throw the ball a whole lot, but when he did, he made it count. He ranks 12th in team history for passing yards, and that says somethin’.
But of course, there’s so many more quarterbacks that wore the Bears jersey over the years. Some made big plays, some didn’t last too long, but they all had their moments. Some folks might say that quarterback’s been a weak spot for the Bears for a long time, and they wouldn’t be wrong. But when you think of all these fellas, you start to realize that, well, we’ve had some good ones. Maybe not the best in the league, but they all had their time to shine.
As we look to the future, maybe we’ll get a quarterback that’ll finally get us another Super Bowl. The Bears sure could use one, that’s for sure. But till then, we remember the legends, the guys who put their blood, sweat, and tears into that Bears uniform. They ain’t always been perfect, but they sure did their best. And that’s what you gotta respect.
