Okay, so I got sucked into this whole Angel Hernandez umpire drama online. You know, the guy everyone loves to hate because of his, uh, “unique” calls? I decided to see what the fuss was all about.
First, I scoured the internet for compilations of his “worst calls.” Man, there’s a ton! I bookmarked a bunch of videos and articles, it was pretty overwhelming, I am not gonna lie. They’re all over the place – Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, you name it.
Then, I started watching some of these videos. I grabbed a notebook and jotted down notes while I watched. I mean, some of these calls were real head-scratchers. Like, how did he miss that? I was trying to be objective, but wow.
- Watched a bunch of videos.
- Took notes on each one. What happened, what the call was, what people said about it.
- Organized my notes by game, by type of call, etc.
- Looked for patterns. Was there anything specific he seemed to struggle with?
- Compared some of his calls to the rule book, just to see what the deal was.
- Got a sense of the reactions from players and fans.
The Process
Honestly, it was kind of a rabbit hole. I spent hours doing this. I even started to feel a little bad for the guy. I mean, everyone makes mistakes, right? But, yeah, some of these calls were pretty bad. I finished my investigation after a few days. Then, I wrote this post for you to share my results. What a journey!
