Okay, so I’ve been on this quest to find the perfect tennis shorts. Seriously, it’s been harder than perfecting my backhand! I’ve tried so many pairs, and it felt like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but with shorts. Too tight, too loose, too long, too short… you get the idea.

I started by hitting up the usual big-name brands. I figured, “Hey, they sponsor the pros, so they must know what they’re doing, right?” Well, I tried them on. Some were okay, but nothing really blew me away. Some felt like I was wearing a plastic bag – all swishy and not breathable. Others were so tight in the thighs I felt like I was going to rip them doing a lunge.
My Little Experiment
Then, I decided to get a little more methodical. I made a list of what I actually needed in a tennis short:
- Breathability: Because nobody wants to feel like they’re playing in a sauna.
- Movement: I need to be able to lunge, slide, and sprint without feeling restricted.
- Pockets: Gotta have somewhere to stash those extra balls. Deep enough so they don’t fall out mid-point.
- Comfort: No chafing, no weird bunching, just overall comfort.
- Durability: I don’t want to buy new shorts every month.
Armed with my list, I went back to the drawing board (aka, the internet and some local sports stores). I started paying closer attention to the fabrics. I looked for things like “moisture-wicking,” “quick-drying,” and “mesh panels” – basically, anything that promised to keep me cool and dry.
I ordered a bunch of different shorts online, and a few of us got together at the local store, turning the fitting room into my personal testing lab. I did lunges, squats, and even some practice serves (much to the amusement of the store staff, I’m sure). I stuffed tennis balls in the pockets and jumped around to see if they’d stay put.
I’m not going to name specific brands because what works for me might not work for you. Your body type, playing style, and personal preferences all play a role. It’s really trial and error, try different styles, the most important is to test them on, move around and see what does the trick for you!
