Okay, so, I’ve been playing MLB The Show 23 for a while now, and one thing that always tripped me up was how to pick off those pesky baserunners. It seemed like they were always getting a huge jump on me, and I just couldn’t figure out the timing. But, after a lot of trial and error, and some digging around online, I think I’ve finally cracked the code.
So, first, I started messing around in practice mode. I figured that was the best place to experiment without the pressure of a real game. I tried all sorts of button combinations, but nothing seemed to be working consistently. The runners were still getting away from me. I mean, I tried many ways, but they just don’t work.
Then, I remembered reading somewhere that the L2 button was key for pickoffs. On PlayStation, that is. So, I started focusing on that. I’d press L2, and then quickly hit the button for the base I wanted to throw to. For example, Circle for first base, Triangle for second, and so on. It felt a little awkward at first, but I started to get the hang of it.
- First, I’d hold down L2.
- Then, I’d quickly press the button for the base I wanted to throw to.
But, here’s the thing – it’s not just about pressing the buttons. It’s about the timing. You gotta do it when the runner is leaning, like, right in the middle of their lead-off animation. That’s when they’re most vulnerable. At least in my experience. I noticed that if I pressed the button too early or too late, the throw would either be too slow, or the runner would just dive back safely. I also found it was a good idea to vary my timing, so the runners couldn’t get a read on me. They’d be unsure if I was gonna throw or not, and that hesitation was all I needed.
I also learned that having a pitcher with a good pickoff move helps a lot. I mean, it makes sense, right? Some guys are just naturally better at it than others. And a catcher with a strong arm is a must. They need to be able to fire that ball to the base quickly and accurately.
My Strategy
In terms of strategy, I started paying more attention to the runners’ leads. If they were taking a big lead, I’d try to pick them off more often. But if they were playing it safe, I wouldn’t risk it as much. And I’d always be mindful of the game situation. If it was a close game, I’d be more aggressive with my pickoff attempts. But if we were up by a lot, I’d play it a bit safer.
After practicing a ton, I finally started to see results in real games. I was picking off runners left and right! It was such a satisfying feeling to finally get the hang of it. And it definitely made me a better player overall. I’ve tried to be a passive hitter, to take the first pitch or 2 and get a good look. But it’s not easy to implement in real games.
So, yeah, that’s my experience with pickoffs in MLB The Show 23. It took some time and effort, but I eventually figured it out. And trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. Just remember to practice, pay attention to the timing, and use players with good pickoff skills. You’ll be nabbing those baserunners in no time!
