Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Trey Morgan. Sounds like a good ol’ boy, ya know? Heard they picked him up in that baseball draft thingy, the 2023 one, I think. Tampa Bay Rays, that’s the team, yeah? They say he’s a pretty good player, played for LSU, that big college down south. Folks ’round here, they like their college ball, so this Trey must be somethin’ special.
Now, they say he’s a big fella, 6 foot 1 and 215 pounds. That’s a strong boy, I tell ya. He plays first base and sometimes in the outfield, too. Lefty hitter, lefty thrower, just like my grandson Billy, bless his heart. Billy can throw a mean fastball, but this Trey, well, he’s probably better, seein’ as how he got drafted and all.
They picked him in the third round, number 88 overall. Don’t know much ’bout that, but sounds like a pretty good spot to be. They gave him a bunch of money too, somethin’ like $780,000, maybe a little more. That’s a whole lotta money, more than I ever seen in my life. Guess he can buy himself a nice truck and a big ol’ house now.
- He played three years for LSU, that’s a long time. Musta been good if they kept him around that long.
- They say he hit only 20 home runs in all them years. Now, that don’t sound like a lot to me, but what do I know? I ain’t no baseball expert.
- But they say he’s good at other stuff, like catchin’ the ball and throwin’ it. That’s important too, I guess. My grandson Billy, he always says defense wins games.
They sent him down to the minor leagues, to somethin’ called Low-A. That’s like the startin’ point, I reckon. Gotta work your way up, just like in life. Can’t expect to be a big shot right away. He’s gotta learn to hit with them wooden bats now, not them metal ones they use in college. That’s a whole different ballgame, I tell ya.
This Trey, he seems like a good kid, though. They say he signed his contract and everything, all official like. He was born in New Orleans back in 2002. That’s a nice city, been there once with my sister Bessie. We had some good gumbo, lemme tell ya. But this ain’t ’bout gumbo, it’s ’bout Trey.
He had this one game, they say, where he got four hits and six RBIs. Don’t rightly know what an RBI is, but it sounds important. And he walked more than he struck out, which I guess is a good thing. You don’t wanna be strikin’ out all the time, that’s for sure. My Billy, he strikes out sometimes, but he’s learnin’. He’s just a young’un.
So, this Trey Morgan draft thing, it’s a big deal, I guess. He’s got a chance to be a big star, make a lot of money, and make his mama proud. That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Workin’ hard, doin’ your best, and makin’ somethin’ of yourself. I hope he does well, that Trey. He seems like a good boy, and I always root for the good guys.
They even say somethin’ ’bout him makin’ a good play, throwin’ somebody out at home plate on a bunt. Helped his team win a big game. Folks in Baton Rouge, where LSU is, they’ll be talkin’ ’bout that play for years, they say. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Leavin’ your mark on the world, even if it’s just throwin’ a baseball.
Baseball teams can’t just trade those draft picks around like they’re tradin’ chickens at the market. They got rules, see? Started way back in 1965, and they tightened ’em up in 1985, just to make sure things stayed fair. So, when the Rays picked Trey, they meant to keep him, see? They weren’t just gonna turn around and swap him for somebody else like a used car.
So, that’s the story of Trey Morgan, as best as I can tell it. A good ol’ boy from Louisiana, drafted to play baseball. I wish him all the best, and I hope he hits a whole bunch of home runs, even if he didn’t hit too many in college. Maybe he’ll even come back to our little town someday and visit, wouldn’t that be somethin’? We could have a big barbecue and invite the whole town. That would be somethin’ to remember.
