So, I set out to recreate the Chicago Bulls logo, but I wanted the bull to be completely black. I started by finding a high-quality image of the original logo online. I made sure that it was a good size and resolution so I would have a good base to work with.
Once I found the image I wanted, I brought it into my favorite image editing software. I’m no graphic designer, but I’ve messed around with these programs enough to know the basics. First things first, I needed to isolate the bull from the rest of the logo. I used the magic wand tool to select all the red areas of the bull. This was pretty easy since it’s a solid color.
- Select the red: Used the magic wand tool to select all the red parts.
- Invert the selection: This made everything except the bull selected.
- Delete the background: Got rid of everything else around the bull.
After the selection, I realized I also wanted to remove the white details within the bull, like the eyes and the outline of the horns. So, I zoomed in and used the same magic wand tool to select these areas. With these areas now selected, I simply filled them with black using the paint bucket tool.
Now, I had a completely black silhouette of the bull. It was kind of cool how different it looked just by changing the color. It felt more intense and modern, or maybe I was just imagining things. But, I wasn’t quite done yet. I wanted a crisp outline.
Adding the outline
To get that sharp, clean outline, I used the “stroke” layer style. I just used the paint bucket tool to fill with black.
I played around with the size and color a bit until it looked right to me.
Finally, I saved my new black Chicago Bulls logo as a PNG. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s just a fun little project I wanted to do, and I’m stoked about it! This whole thing took me, like, an hour? I mean, it was easy. I just hope I don’t get into trouble, because it seems like an official logo.
