Well, I was sittin’ on my porch the other day, sippin’ some sweet tea, when I heard ’bout this young fella, Reed Sheppard, over at Kentucky. Now, y’all probably heard the name before, ’cause this boy’s been makin’ some noise in the basketball world. He’s just a freshman, but lordy, it seems like folks can’t stop talkin’ ‘bout him. The big man, John Calipari, the coach over at Kentucky, he been talkin’ ‘bout him too. And let me tell ya, Coach Cal, he ain’t one to just say good things unless he really means it.
Now, I ain’t no expert in basketball, but I know a thing or two ’bout folks who got that special kind of talent, and this Reed Sheppard fella? Well, he sure does seem to have somethin’ about him. I mean, Coach Cal, he got a lotta good things to say. He said the boy’s been real good, and when Cal says that, you best believe it means somethin’. Cal said Reed’s one of them players who don’t carry all them high expectations on his shoulders, and that’s a good thing, I reckon. Sometimes, all that pressure can get to a young’un, but Reed? He just plays his game, calm-like, and I think that’s what folks like ‘bout him.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ this fella’s just a little bit of nothin’. He’s out there on the court, givin’ it his all. He’s been playin’ good, even though he ain’t always gettin’ the points like you might expect. As of last Thursday, he was sittin’ at an average of 2.5 points and 1.8 assists per game. Not bad for a young’un, but I reckon he’s got room to grow. Ain’t we all, though? He’s also shootin’ a decent 33% from beyond that three-point line, which is a good start. But I heard tell that his season-high points so far was six, and he’s still workin’ on gettin’ more consistent.
Now, you gotta understand, this boy’s got big dreams, just like most young folks do when they get that taste of basketball fame. Word around town, or I reckon around the league, is that Reed’s gonna go ahead and enter the 2024 NBA draft. Yep, he’s lettin’ go of his college eligibility and goin’ all-in on the pros. Ain’t no lookin’ back now, as they say. I don’t blame him though; if the boy’s ready, he’s ready. Coach Cal, though, he’s been a bit of a father figure to Reed, and I reckon he’s proud of how far the boy’s come.
Speaking of Coach Cal, well, the man’s been coachin’ for a long time. He’s been all over the place, from Memphis to Kentucky, and he’s coached a whole lotta talented players who went on to the big leagues. Reed Sheppard’s no different, I guess. He’s one of those kids that Cal knows got the heart and hustle, even if he ain’t always got the big numbers. That’s the thing with young folks in sports—sometimes it takes a little while for them to find their stride, but once they do, they’re hard to stop.
In fact, Coach Cal’s been all over the place lately, watchin’ his former players. I heard he was at a game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets, checkin’ out PJ Washington. Ain’t it somethin’ how these players that Cal coached go on to make their mark in the NBA? He’s done a lot for ’em, and I reckon Reed will be no different.
Now, if you ask Coach Cal, he’ll tell ya that Reed reminds him a lot of his mama, Stacey. Now that’s somethin’ you don’t hear every day, is it? But Cal’s right. Sometimes you can see a little bit of a person’s parents in ’em, and I guess Reed takes after his mama in some ways. I reckon that’s a compliment, don’t you?
I hear tell Reed’s done some mighty impressive things already in his young career, like hittin’ a buzzer-beater shot to win the game for Kentucky against Mississippi State. That’s the kinda thing that makes folks stand up and take notice. But even with all the highlights, Reed’s still got a lotta work to do, and I’m sure Coach Cal’s right there beside him, helpin’ him along the way.
And if y’all were wonderin’ what Coach Cal thinks of the whole thing, well, he’s supportin’ Reed every step of the way. Just like he does with all his players. He’s like a big ol’ safety net for ‘em, catchin’ ‘em when they fall and cheerin’ ‘em on when they succeed. If you ask me, that’s the kinda coach every young player needs. Someone who believes in ’em even when the world ain’t always kind.
So, who knows what the future holds for Reed Sheppard? If he keeps workin’ hard, it looks like he might just make it big. But whether he does or not, he’s got a coach who believes in him, and that’s worth a whole lot in this world.
Reed Sheppard’s Freshman Season: A Glimpse Into the Future of Basketball
If you ask Coach Calipari, this boy’s got a lotta potential. He may not be the one leadin’ the scoreboard just yet, but he’s got heart. And that’s what counts in the long run, don’t it?

- Season-high points: 6
- Shooting 33% from beyond the three-point line
