Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “Coco Gauff and Andy Roddick” pairing pop up everywhere lately. People are talking about Roddick, the former US Open champ, coaching Gauff, the rising tennis star. I was curious, so I decided to dig in and see what the deal was.

First, I watched a bunch of recent Gauff matches. I wanted to get a feel for her game, her strengths, and where she might need some help. She’s obviously incredibly talented, super athletic, but sometimes her serve seemed a little shaky, and her forehand could be inconsistent.
Then, I went down a YouTube rabbit hole of old Andy Roddick matches. Man, that guy had a monster serve! It was like a rocket launcher. I also noticed how aggressive he was, always looking to dictate points and come to the net.
Next, I started reading articles and interviews about their partnership. Apparently, Roddick initially joined Gauff’s team in a more limited, advisory role, and it’s become more hands-on. The story is that Brad Gilbert, Gauff’s main coach, actually brought Roddick in. They wanted someone who could help Coco with her serve and overall aggressive game plan.
I specifically looked for any interviews where Roddick talked about working with Gauff. I found a few good ones where he emphasized the importance of simplifying things for her, not overloading her with information. He also talked about helping her use her athleticism to her advantage, being more proactive on the court.
My Observations After Watching Their Work
- Serve Improvement: Gauff’s serve definitely looks more solid. It seems like she’s getting more free points off it, which is huge.
- More Aggressive Play: I see her taking the ball earlier, trying to dictate more, and coming to the net more often. It’s not always perfect, but the intention is there.
- Forehand Consistency: This is still a work in progress, as it always the case in tennis. But under pressure, there were fewer unforced errors from that wing.
It’s still early days, but I’m really excited to see how this partnership develops. Roddick’s experience and expertise, combined with Gauff’s raw talent, could be a winning combination. They are for sure a great fit, I am looking forward to see how they work together and how Coco’s improvement is in the future.
