So, I kept hearing folks talk about Andrew Wiggins’ wingspan. You know, how long his arms are, helps him on the court, defense, all that stuff. It’s impressive, sure. Got me thinking, though, not really about basketball.

It made me think about reach. Like, our own reach. Not just how far your arms stretch side to side. More like, what you can actually grab onto in life, what you can influence. Sometimes you feel like your own ‘wingspan’ is kinda short, you know?
I remember this one time, years back, I tried to get into woodworking. Saw some cool stuff people made online, thought, “Yeah, I can do that.” Bought a cheap saw, some wood. Had this grand idea for a bookshelf.
My Grand Woodworking Plan
Well, let me tell you. My reach definitely exceeded my grasp, or maybe my wingspan wasn’t wide enough for that project. Everything I tried to do just… didn’t work right.
- The cuts weren’t straight. Not even close.
- Measurements were all over the place. How? Still don’t know.
- Tried joining two pieces, ended up with a weird, wobbly… thing.
It was frustrating. Really felt like I just couldn’t reach the level needed. Like my arms were too short to handle the tools properly, metaphorically speaking. I spent a whole weekend covered in sawdust, getting nowhere.
Ended up just stacking the wood in the corner of the garage. It sat there for ages. A monument to my failed reach. Eventually, I just used the wood for some rough shelves in the shed, nothing fancy. Did the job, but wasn’t the grand vision.

So yeah, thinking about someone’s actual, physical wingspan like Wiggins’… it just brings back that feeling. Sometimes you see what others can do, their natural gifts or skills, their ‘reach’, and you gotta be real about your own. Doesn’t mean you stop trying, but you gotta understand your own limits, maybe find different ways to grab what you need. Or maybe just appreciate the folks who do have that 7-foot wingspan, literal or otherwise.
