Today I messed around with trying to draw a dober eye. I’ve always liked those dogs, so I thought, why not give it a shot?
First, I grabbed a bunch of pictures of dobermans online. Just Googled it, you know? I picked one with a good, clear shot of the eye. Then I opened up my drawing program. I usually just use the basic one that came with my computer. Nothing fancy.
I started with a simple circle, a rough shape for the eye. After that, I looked real close at the picture and tried to copy the way the eyelid folds. It’s kind of tricky, all those little wrinkles and how the light hits them.
Getting the Shape Right
I kept going back and forth, erasing and redrawing. The inner corner of the eye is kinda pointy, and the outer part slopes down a bit. I must’ve redone that part like ten times. Then I drew in the pupil, a big dark circle in the middle.
- Drew a circle for the eye
- Added the eyelid folds
- Drew the pupil in the center
Next up was the iris. That’s the colored part. Dobermans usually have dark brown eyes, so I filled it in with a deep brown color. I left a little white spot for the highlight, to make it look shiny and alive. Then I tried to make some lighter parts of the iris to show that it is not just one flat color.
Adding Details
After that, I started adding some details around the eye. There’s some fur and skin folds. I just scribbled in some lines, trying to follow the direction of the fur in the picture. I also added some shading under the eye to make it look more 3D. I used a darker brown for the shadows.
- Colored the iris dark brown
- Added a highlight to the pupil
- Drew fur and skin folds around the eye
- Added shading for a 3D effect
I kept messing with it for a while, zooming in and out, tweaking things here and there. It was actually pretty fun. I think it turned out okay for a first try. It definitely looks like a dog’s eye, but maybe not exactly like a doberman’s. I should probably practice some more.
Anyway, that’s how I spent my afternoon. Drawing a dog’s eye. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try drawing the whole dog. Or maybe a cat. Who knows?
