Okay, so today I watched a tennis match between Frances Tiafoe and Yoshihito Nishioka. I really wanted to record some data, so I grabbed my notebook and pen and started to write down some notes.
First off, I needed to find a place to watch the match. I looked around online and found that Tennis TV had a stream. I don’t have a subscription, but I signed up for a free account to see if I could catch some highlights. While I was waiting for the match to start, I opened my notebook and wrote down the names of the players at the top of the page: Frances Tiafoe vs Yoshihito Nishioka. I also jotted down the name of the tournament, Atlanta Open, just so I wouldn’t forget.
As the match started, I began to take notes on each point. I wasn’t sure exactly what to write, so I just started with simple things like “Tiafoe ace” or “Nishioka winner.” It was tough to keep up at first, the ball was flying so fast! But I tried my best to get the important stuff down.
During the match, I also kept track of the score. This was pretty easy, I just wrote down the game score after each game and the set score after each set. Sometimes I would look up at my notes and try to see if I could spot any patterns. Was one player winning more points on their serve? Was one player making more errors? It was all a bit messy, but I figured I could always clean it up later.
I used Google to look up some stuff during the match. I found that there’s actually a whole bunch of free translation tools out there. I translated a few of my notes into French just for fun. I also found a page with the lyrics to some old Smothers Brothers songs. Don’t know why, but it just popped into my head. I even stumbled upon some Reddit discussion about accessing the old version of the site.
- Tiafoe serving well
- Nishioka good returns
- Long rallies
- Tiafoe wins first set
By the end of the match, my notebook was a real mess. I had scribbled notes, scores, and even a few random thoughts. But you know what? It was actually pretty fun. I felt like I was more engaged in the match because I was actively recording what was happening.
The Result
In the end, I had a decent record of the match, even if it was a bit chaotic. I realized that keeping track of sports data is a real skill, and I definitely need more practice. But hey, it was a good start. Maybe next time I’ll try using a spreadsheet or something to organize my notes better.
Anyway, it was a fun experiment. I might try this again for the next big match. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good at it someday! I can at least pretend to be a sports analyst for a day. Feels good!
