Okay, so, today I wanted to mess around with Fred Couples’ setup, see what all the fuss is about. I’ve heard a lot about this guy and his gear, so I figured, why not give it a shot myself? I started by digging up what clubs he’s been using lately.
Seems like he switched drivers recently. Some folks online were saying he was using a TaylorMade Stealth Plus, but then I saw another post saying he’s now swinging a Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond. Guess he likes to keep things fresh, or maybe he’s just trying to find that perfect club, you know?
The Driver Dilemma
- First, I tried out the TaylorMade Stealth Plus. They say it’s got low spin and mid-launch, good for players who are already pretty decent.
- Then, just to compare, I grabbed a Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond, since that’s what he’s apparently using now.
Honestly, I couldn’t tell a huge difference, but then again, I’m no pro. Both felt pretty solid, and I managed to hit the ball… well, not as far as Couples, but far enough.
Irons? What Irons?
Here’s a funny thing I found out – Couples apparently doesn’t use anything longer than a 7-iron! Can you believe that? I mean, I know some guys prefer hybrids and woods, but this is a whole other level. I guess he must have them special made for him or something.
The Ping Experiment
Another thing I stumbled upon was this post about Couples trying out some Ping i210 irons. With Aerotech Steelfiber shafts. Now, I couldn’t get my hands on that exact setup, but I did find some Ping irons to try. They felt pretty good, but again, I’m no expert. Just trying to get a feel for what this legend uses, you know?
Overall Thoughts
It was a fun day messing around with clubs inspired by Fred Couples. I can’t say I’m suddenly hitting the ball like him, but it was interesting to see what kind of gear a pro like him prefers. Makes you wonder how much of it is the equipment and how much is just pure skill, right? Anyway, I need a lot more practice, but it was a fun experiment.
I’m gonna keep messing around with different clubs, see what works best for me. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll have my own “WITB” post that people will read, ha! Until then, I’ll just keep swinging and hope for the best.
