Okay, so I gotta tell you about this crazy thing I did with Magic: The Gathering cards. The title? “Gingerbread Man Magic The Gathering.” Sounds weird, right? But trust me, it was a blast.
It all started when I saw this artwork of a gingerbread man in one of the new sets. I mean, who doesn’t love a gingerbread man? And this one looked like he was ready to kick some butt. So, I immediately thought, “I gotta build a deck around this guy!” But then I was like, “Wait, what creature type would he even be?” I pinged MaRo about it. Construct? Elemental? Turns out, I was right about him being a Golem, which was pretty cool.
So I jumped into building the deck. I started searching for cards that had “gingerbread man” in the artwork. Found about 11 of them. I know, not a lot, but enough to get the ball rolling. I’m not gonna lie, it was a bit tough finding the right cards. I used that website, you know the one everyone uses to look up cards, and tried to find cards that fit the theme. Typed in “golem” and “splicer” and a bunch of stuff, just experimenting.
The first version of the deck was a mess. It had some good cards, but the mana curve was all over the place. Like, sometimes I had too many lands, sometimes not enough. I did some calculations, and the average mana value was like, 4 or something, which is way too high. I mean, I like big creatures as much as the next guy, but you gotta be able to cast them!
I played a few games with it, and let me tell you, it did not go well. I got crushed most of the time. But hey, that’s part of the fun, right? Learning from your mistakes and all that.
So I went back to the drawing board. I focused on getting the mana curve down. I also looked for cards that synergized well with golems. Turns out, there are some pretty sweet ones out there. I threw in some of those, and also added some cards that could help me find the gingerbread man, because let’s be honest, he’s the star of the show.
After a lot of tweaking and playtesting, I finally got the deck to a place where I was happy with it. The average mana value was much better, around 2, which felt much smoother. The best part? I was actually winning games! It was so satisfying to see all that hard work pay off. I even managed to pull off some crazy combos with the gingerbread man.
In the end I found that people often play a deck archetype called Red Deck Wins. It’s got cheap cards and a lot of synergy, which is great for beginners. Reminded me of that Mono Red deck from Theros-Tarkir Standard, where everything was super cheap to cast.
I found that this game started back in August 1993. Man, that’s a long time ago!
Here are some of the cards that really shined in the deck:
- Of course, the Gingerbread Man himself!
- Some other cool Golems.
- That new guy, Brenard, he’s a beast with Golems.
All in all, it was a super fun experience. It just goes to show that you can build a deck around pretty much anything in Magic, even a gingerbread man. And who knows, maybe I’ll even take this deck to a tournament someday. Just for the laughs, of course… or maybe not. We’ll see!
