Alright, so yesterday I tackled the NYT crossword, and lemme tell ya, it was a bit of a ride. I figured I’d jot down how it all went down, you know, for posterity and maybe if anyone else is struggling with the same puzzles.

First thing’s first, I grabbed my coffee and pulled up the crossword on my iPad. I always start with the Across clues, just feels right. I scanned through the easy ones, looking for those gimmes, you know, the obvious stuff. Things like “Eeny, meeny, miny, ___” (MOE, duh!) and “Opposite of low” (HIGH, easy peasy). Knocked those out pretty quick. That gives you a bit of a foundation, a few letters in place to work with.
Then things started to get a little trickier. I hit a wall with a few of the longer words. I usually try to focus on the clues that seem like they might have some kind of wordplay or a common phrase. This one was “Bit of stage direction” (ENTER). Took me a sec, but once I got that, it unlocked a bunch of Down clues. Seriously, those longer answers are KEY.
The Down clues were a mixed bag. Some were straightforward, like “Dog breed with a wrinkly face” (PUG). Others were a bit more obscure, requiring some serious brainpower. I remember getting stuck on “Suffix with novel or legal” for a while. It was “-IST”! I always forget that one.
When I really get stuck, I have a few strategies. First, I re-read all the clues I’ve already answered, sometimes a fresh look can spark something. Then, I look for patterns. Are there any letters that are repeating in a certain area? That can help you guess at possible words. And if all else fails, I might resort to a little Googling. I try to avoid it if I can, but sometimes you just need a nudge in the right direction.
There was this one clue, “Classic arcade game with ghosts” (PACMAN). I felt like I should know it, but my brain just wouldn’t cooperate. I stared at it for like five minutes before it finally clicked. Ugh, those are the worst! But the feeling of finally cracking it is so satisfying.

I plugged away, slowly but surely filling in the grid. I gotta admit, I did peek at a couple of answers online towards the end. I hate doing that, but sometimes you’re just completely stumped. No shame in admitting defeat, right?
After about an hour and a half, the grid was finally complete! I double-checked everything, made sure there weren’t any typos, and hit the “Submit” button. Victory!
Here’s the thing I learned today: persistence pays off. Even when you feel like you’re never going to solve it, just keep chipping away at it. And don’t be afraid to ask for help (or Google a few answers) if you need to. The point is to have fun and challenge yourself.
- Started with Across clues
- Focused on longer words
- Used patterns to guess
- Googled when stuck (a little bit!)
- Persistence!
Anyway, that was my NYT crossword experience for today. Hope this helped anyone struggling with the puzzle! Happy puzzling, y’all!
