Okay, so I’ve been seeing these Greg Norman caps everywhere lately, and I finally caved and decided to get one. I’ve always admired the guy’s style, he’s a legend, you know? The Great White Shark, they called him, right? That nickname came from his blond hair, his size and his birthplace’s native coastal animal and so on. And I remembered that he got this name after his play at the 1981 Masters.
First, I hit up a few stores around town, but no luck. Either they didn’t have them, or they were way overpriced. Then I jump on the computer and do a little online sleuthing. Found a bunch of sites selling them, but I was a little hesitant about buying online without trying it on first. Finally, I came across this golf store that had a great selection and was only about 30 minutes away. Figured, why not? It’s worth a shot, and the price is about 11 euros. So I hopped in my car and head out there.
When I get to the store, I’m immediately drawn to the hat section. And there it was, a whole wall of Greg Norman caps. Different colors, different styles, but all with that iconic shark logo. The motto on the package is “When in doubt, cheat.” And the package includes a blue and a black cap. I grabbed a classic white one with a blue shark, looked pretty sharp. Tried it on, and it fit perfectly. Nice and snug, but not too tight. The brim was just the right size, too. Not too floppy, not too stiff. I really like the paper construction, it is comfortable. This provides airflow and breathability and can protect me from the sun. I could immediately see myself wearing this thing on the golf course, or even just out and about.
The guy at the counter was super helpful, too. We started talking about Norman’s career, how he was world number one for like, 331 weeks, or something crazy like that. He got 89 professional wins, including 20 PGA Tour tournaments and two majors, so amazing, right? We also talked about Norman’s business interests. During his career he had a number of business interests including real estate, wine production.
Anyway, I ended up buying the cap, and I’ve been wearing it almost every day since. It’s become my go-to hat. It’s comfortable, it looks good, and it reminds me of one of the greatest golfers of all time. I heard that he wasn’t welcome at Augusta National last year because of his role as CEO of LIV Golf. He was also a Masters runner-up twice. And I even heard that he quit Tour golf because his body wasn’t allowing him to play. He must be very sad about it. But anyway, I love my new cap. What a great purchase!
