Getting Hands-On with That Maverick Vibe
Alright, so I kept seeing this Maverick Apparel stuff around. You know, the logos, the style. Caught my eye, I guess. It got me thinking, not really about buying it straight up, but more about the whole vibe they push. That independent, go-your-own-way kind of thing.

So, I got this idea. Maybe I could try and capture some of that feeling myself, but you know, DIY style. Not a direct copy, nah, more like taking that energy and putting my own spin on some plain gear I had lying around. Thought it might be a fun little project for a weekend.
First step, I dug out an old black hoodie. It was plain, decent quality, just sitting in the closet. Perfect blank canvas. Then I started sketching some ideas. Wanted something bold, simple, kinda like their stuff but definitely mine. Spent a good hour just messing around with shapes and letters on paper.
Next up was figuring out how to get the design onto the hoodie. I thought about screen printing, but man, setting that up felt like too much hassle for a one-off thing. Remembered I had some fabric paint and stencils from a previous project that didn’t quite work out.
Okay, here’s where it got messy.
- I tried cutting a stencil out of some stiff cardstock. Took ages to get the lines clean.
- Then I laid the hoodie flat, put the stencil down, and started dabbing on the fabric paint. White paint on black fabric.
- Mistake number one: Didn’t secure the stencil well enough. It shifted slightly. Ugh.
- Mistake number two: Probably used a bit too much paint in one spot. It bled under the stencil edge.
So, I peeled off the stencil after letting it sit for a bit. The result? Well, it wasn’t exactly professional looking. The lines were fuzzy, one part was thicker than the other. It looked… homemade. Very homemade.

I let it dry, tried it on. Looked in the mirror. It wasn’t terrible, I guess. It had character? Yeah, let’s call it character. It definitely wasn’t the clean, sharp look you see on the Maverick gear, that’s for sure.
What I Reckon Now
Looking back, it was kind of fun just messing around, trying to make something with my hands. But it also made me realize getting that polished look takes real skill, proper tools, and probably a lot more patience than I had that afternoon. You see those clean logos and prints on brands like Maverick, and you kinda take it for granted sometimes.
My DIY hoodie? It’s unique, I’ll give it that. Won’t be mistaken for the real deal anytime soon. But it was a good reminder that sometimes just buying the thing is easier, even if the DIY route feels more… maverick? Ha. Anyway, that was my little experiment trying to capture that vibe. Learned a thing or two, mostly about how not to stencil fabric paint.
