Okay, so today I decided to try something a bit different out on the green. Been watching some golf, you know, and that guy, Jordan Spieth, his putting always gets me thinking. Especially that thing he does, looking at the hole instead of the ball sometimes. Figured, why not give it a go myself? Just messing around, really.

Dragged myself out to the practice green. Weather wasn’t too bad. Got my putter and a bunch of balls. First few minutes, just did my normal routine, get the feel of the green speed. Everything felt pretty standard.
Then, I thought, right, let’s try this Spieth thing. Lined up maybe a 10-footer. Took my stance. The hard part? Forcing myself to look up at the hole before I took the putter back. Man, that felt weird. Like, really weird.
How It Actually Felt Trying It
My first few attempts were just awful. Seriously bad. One I barely hit, dribbled halfway there. Another I jabbed and sent it way past. It felt completely unnatural not having my eyes locked on that ball through the stroke. My brain was screaming, “Look down, you idiot!”
I kept at it though. Focused purely on looking at the hole and trying to trust my stroke. It’s funny, you feel totally disconnected from the actual hit. It’s all feel, or supposed to be. The biggest problem was distance control. Some felt okay-ish off the face but ended up miles short or long. It was all over the shop.
Did I make any?

- Yeah, surprisingly, a couple dropped. Short ones mostly.
- Felt like pure luck when they did, honestly.
- It didn’t feel like I made them, more like they happened by accident.
- Longer putts? Forget about it. Total guesswork.
Spent maybe half an hour just doing this. It was interesting, I’ll give it that. Makes you think about how much you rely on seeing the ball contact. Or maybe how much you think you rely on it.
By the end, I was kinda mentally tired from concentrating on not looking at the ball. Switched back to my normal putting for the last few minutes and it felt like coming home, haha. Much more comfortable.
So, yeah. That was my little experiment trying the Spieth putting style. Not sure I’ll be doing it in a real round anytime soon, felt way too inconsistent for me right now. But it was a thing I tried. Done for the day.
