Well, let me tell ya a little somethin’ ‘bout them 2009 Oklahoma Sooners. Now, that year, them boys was playin’ some real tough football, but it wasn’t easy, no sir. They had a record of 8 wins and 5 losses, which ain’t too shabby, but it sure ain’t the best. They was sittin’ in the 35th spot outta 120 teams. That’s what you call middle of the road, I reckon. They were in the Big 12 Conference, and even though they did pretty good, they didn’t make it to the top like folks were hopin’ for. But don’t go thinkin’ they didn’t put up a fight, no way. They had a strong season in a lotta ways, even though things didn’t always go their way.
The head coach, Bob Stoops, well, he’s been around for a long time, and he had them boys ready to play, even if the record didn’t show all the heart they had. Now, they played 13 games that season, and I reckon that’s a lotta work. They scored a total of 404 points, averaging about 31.1 points per game, which put ‘em at 29th outta 120 teams. Ain’t too bad for a team that had its share of bumps along the way. On the flip side, their defense was somethin’ special, lettin’ up only 189 points all season. That’s only about 14.5 points per game, which was the 7th best in the whole country. You don’t see that every day!
Now, if you look at their conference record, they were 5-3. That’s not bad, but it also ain’t enough to bring home a Big 12 Championship. Still, you gotta give ‘em credit for fightin’ through it. They had some tough games, but they didn’t back down. They got a bunch of good players on the team, like Sam Bradford at quarterback, but injuries really hurt ‘em. You could tell they were missin’ some key players here and there, and that made things harder for ‘em, but they kept goin’ strong.
But even though the season didn’t end with a Big 12 title or a national championship, folks still remember that 2009 team for its grit and determination. They didn’t quit, and that’s somethin’ you gotta respect. Them Sooners are a proud bunch, and even though they weren’t the top dogs that year, they sure did represent Oklahoma with pride.
So, to wrap it up, the 2009 season might not have been the ultimate championship run folks hoped for, but it showed what Oklahoma football is made of—heart, toughness, and a never-give-up attitude. It’s been a long time since that season, but fans still talk about it, and that’s sayin’ somethin’. It’s a season that’ll stick in folks’ minds for a long while.
