Okay, folks, let’s dive into my little project from the weekend – making birthday shirts with pictures!

The Idea Popped Up
So, my niece’s birthday is coming up, and I wanted to do something a bit more personal than just buying a random gift. I thought, “Hey, why not a custom shirt?” And then, boom! The idea of putting her adorable little face on it hit me.
Gathering My Supplies
First things first, I needed the goods. I grabbed:
- Plain white T-shirts (gotta have a blank canvas, right?)
- Transfer paper (the magic stuff that makes it all happen)
- Scissors (basic, but crucial)
- An iron (for, well, ironing the design on)
- My trusty printer (to get the pictures onto the transfer paper)
I did my best to choose the best options.
The Design Process
Next up, the fun part! I picked out a few of my favorite photos of my niece – some silly, some sweet, all super cute. Then, I opened up a simple photo editing program on my computer. Nothing fancy, just something to resize the pictures and maybe add a little “Happy Birthday!” text.
I made sure to flip the images horizontally. It’s called a ‘mirror image’. Seriously, this is important! If you don’t do this, your design will be backwards on the shirt. Don’t make my mistakes! I did this by mistake last time.

Printing and Prepping
With the designs ready, I loaded the transfer paper into my printer, following the instructions on the package. Each brand is a little different, so pay attention! I hit “print” and watched the magic happen.
Once the printing was done, I grabbed my scissors and carefully cut around each design. I didn’t want any weird white edges showing up on the shirt.
Ironing Time!
This is where things get a bit…heated. I laid the shirt flat on my ironing board, placed the design face down where I wanted it, and then followed the transfer paper instructions for ironing. Usually, it involves applying firm pressure and moving the iron around for a certain amount of time.
I double-checked to make sure I was using the right heat setting. Too hot, and you might scorch the shirt or the design. Too cool, and the design won’t stick.
The Big Reveal
After letting the shirt cool down completely (patience is a virtue!), I carefully peeled off the backing paper. And there it was! A custom-made birthday shirt with my niece’s face on it. Success!

I’m no professional, but it turned out pretty darn cute. And more importantly, it’s made with love. I’m pretty sure my niece will have fun with it, and that’s all that matters!
