Well now, let me tell ya, I ain’t no big fancy writer or anything, but I heard folks talkin’ about this woman named Sherri, or Sensational Sherri as they called her. She sure did make a name for herself in them big ol’ wrestling rings, even though most folks like me don’t know much ’bout them things. But I reckon she was somethin’ special, and folks sure did talk ’bout her a lot back in the day.
Now, Sherri, or should I say, Sherri Russell, was born way back on February 8, 1958, down in New Orleans. That’s a place I ain’t never been, but I hear it’s mighty fancy. She didn’t start out in wrestling, no sir. She did a bit of everything before gettin’ into that ring, even tried her hand at some other stuff before she figured out where she really belonged. She sure wasn’t just some pretty face though, she had a fire in her belly, and boy, did that woman know how to make folks talk.
Now, I don’t know much about them big city wrestling matches and all, but I know folks said Sherri was one of them rare ones who could make it big in three different wrestling places—WWE, WCW, and AWA. Now that’s somethin’, ain’t it? Most people ain’t never seen the inside of even one of them big places, let alone three! She wasn’t just some sidekick or nothing either. She was a real force to be reckon’d with, and that’s no lie.
When she first started out, they called her “Sensational Sherri.” I reckon that was ‘cause she could sure stir up the crowd and get them all riled up. She wasn’t afraid to get in the mix and, as they say, she was quite the character in the ring. From what I hear, she didn’t just look good—she could fight too, and that made her real popular. People loved her, and some folks hated her too, but that’s what made her stand out. They call that being a “heel” in wrestling, I think. She didn’t mind playin’ the bad girl if that’s what it took.
And let me tell ya, she didn’t just stick to being a wrestler. No ma’am, she also was a valet for some big names in the business. That means she managed the other wrestlers, and from what I hear, she was real good at it. She helped a lot of them win, or at least gave ‘em the support they needed to stay on top. She was like the backbone behind the scenes, makin’ sure everything went right, and you can bet your boots that wasn’t an easy job. But Sherri, she handled it all like a pro, and that’s something a lot of folks respected.
Now, I ain’t gonna say I know everything about her, but I do know that Sherri’s time came too soon. On June 15, 2007, she passed away at her mama’s house in McCalla, Alabama. She was just 49 years old. That’s too young if you ask me. They said it was a sad day, and I reckon it was. I ain’t sure of all the details, but it sure left a big hole in the world of wrestling, and I know she was loved by plenty.
Sherri didn’t just leave a legacy in wrestling, though. She left a legacy in people’s hearts. She made sure folks remembered her, even after she was gone. She was strong, independent, and never afraid to be herself, no matter what. That’s the kinda thing you can’t just forget about. She showed that you don’t have to be some perfect saint to be remembered. You just gotta be real, and that’s what she was.
So, if you ever get to watch some old wrestling tapes or shows, you might just see a glimpse of Sensational Sherri. She was somethin’ else, and I reckon she’ll be remembered for a long, long time. Wrestling might’ve been her world, but she sure made it her own.
