Okay, so I recently decided to try out one of those latch hook kits, and I picked a dragon design because, well, dragons are awesome. I figured I’d share my whole experience, from start to finish, in case anyone else is thinking about giving it a shot.

Getting Started
First, I opened up the kit. Inside, there was a pre-printed canvas with the dragon design, a bunch of pre-cut yarn pieces in different colors, and the latch hook tool itself. The canvas was pretty stiff, which I guess makes it easier to work with. The yarn colors were super vibrant – lots of greens, blues, and even some fiery reds and oranges for the dragon’s breath.
The Latch Hooking Process
I grabbed the latch hook tool, which is basically a small metal hook with a little latch that opens and closes. I’ll admit, it took me a few tries to get the hang of it. You’re supposed to fold a piece of yarn in half, hook it onto the tool, push the tool through a square on the canvas, catch the loop of yarn, and then pull it back through, creating a knot. Sounds simple, right? Well, my first few knots were a little wonky, but I eventually got into a rhythm.
- Fold the yarn.
- Hook it onto the tool.
- Push through the canvas.
- Catch the loop.
- Pull it back through.
I started with the dragon’s body, working in small sections. It was kind of meditative, actually. Just me, the yarn, and the canvas. I could see the dragon slowly starting to take shape, which was pretty cool.
The Long Haul
Honestly, it took a lot longer than I expected. I worked on it a little bit each night after work. I think it did for almost two weeks! It was a good way to unwind after a long day. There were definitely times when I felt like my fingers were going to fall off, but I kept pushing through.
The Final Result
Finally, after all that hooking and pulling, my dragon was finished! I trimmed some of the stray yarn ends to make it look a little neater. And you know what? It actually looked pretty good! I was pretty proud of myself for sticking with it. I hung it up on my wall, and it’s a nice, colorful addition to my room. So all in all, I have to give a thumbs up to that time.
