Alright, so I got curious about what actually took down the legendary Babe Ruth. You know, the Sultan of Swat, the Great Bambino… dude was a beast! So, I started digging around to find out what happened.

My Little Investigation
It wasn’t some crazy on-field injury or anything like that. Turns out, it was throat cancer. I went through a bunch of websites, just piecing things together. It was pretty intense stuff.
- First, I confirmed the basics: He died on August 16, 1948. Everyone agrees on that.
- Then I found out it was throat cancer. But not just any throat cancer, it was a specific type, though I’m not gonna try to pronounce the fancy medical name!
- I discovered they tried all sorts of things to save him. Hormone therapy, that was one of them. Then surgery. Sounds rough.
- And get this – he was apparently one of the first people to get both radiation and chemo, one after the other. That’s some serious treatment, even by today’s standards, I guess.
Sadly, all that stuff they tried, it just didn’t work. It’s a bummer, really. You think of these sports heroes as invincible, but they’re just human, like the rest of us. It really makes you think.
So yeah, that’s what I learned. Pretty sad, but also kind of fascinating to see how far medicine has come since then.
