Okay, let’s talk about Grom. I decided to really dig into playing him a while back because, well, chucking those big bombs looked fun. Took me a bit to get used to landing his shots consistently, that split pattern is kinda unique.

Trying Stuff Out – Gadgets First
So, the first thing I looked at were his gadgets. You got the Radio Check, the one that shows enemies in bushes for a sec. I tried it out, yeah. It was… fine? Sometimes useful, mostly felt like I popped it and saw nothing, or saw someone I already knew was there. It just didn’t click for me during frantic matches.
Then I swapped to the Watchtower gadget. The little deployable turret thing? Now that felt different. Plopping that down gave persistent vision in a key area. Super helpful for spotting flankers or just controlling a choke point on the map. Way more value in my games. So, Watchtower became my go-to.
Star Power Decisions
Next up, Star Powers. This choice felt more significant. X-Factor boosts damage at the max range of his main attack. More damage is always tempting, right? Especially on a thrower. I ran with it for a while, and yeah, hitting those long-range bombs felt good. But here’s the thing: Grom is slow. Like, really slow. I often found myself getting pressured, cornered, or just unable to reposition quickly enough.
So I gave Foot Patrol a shot. The speed boost after using his Super? Man, what a difference. Suddenly I could actually dodge stuff, escape sticky situations, or even chase down a weak opponent after landing a big Super. It just made playing him feel smoother, less vulnerable. For my playstyle, staying alive and repositioning was more valuable than the extra bit of damage, so I ended up sticking with Foot Patrol.
Gearing Up
Finally, the gears. This part’s usually more straightforward for me, but I still fiddled around a bit.

- Damage Gear: This felt like a no-brainer. More damage when you’re low on health? Yes, please. Helps finish off targets, especially important for a thrower trying to control space. Slotted that in right away.
- Second Gear Slot: I thought about Speed gear, maybe stack it with Foot Patrol for maximum zoomies? Tried it, felt kinda overkill and less useful than I hoped. Vision gear? Sometimes helpful, but the Watchtower gadget already gave me decent vision control. I ended up settling on the Shield Gear. That extra bit of health regeneration helps a lot, especially since Grom feels kinda squishy. It gave me more staying power in longer fights.
My Go-To Grom Setup
So, after all that messing around, here’s the build I find myself using pretty much all the time now:
- Gadget: Watchtower
- Star Power: Foot Patrol
- Gears: Damage + Shield
This setup just works for me. Watchtower gives control, Foot Patrol gives mobility, and the Damage/Shield gears help with survival and securing kills. It feels like a solid, well-rounded build that lets me actually play Grom effectively without feeling like a sitting duck. Give it a try if you’ve been struggling or just looking for a different way to play him!
