Alright, so today I really dug into this whole Yankees manager thing. It wasn’t about looking up stats like some number cruncher, nah. It was more about trying to get a feel for the actual job, you know? What it’s like being that guy.

First step was just thinking. Sat down with my coffee, just kinda pictured the dugout. The pressure, man. Every single game feels like it matters a ton with that team. So many eyes watching every single move.
Then, I started recalling some games I watched. Tried to remember specific situations. Like, why did they pull that pitcher then? Why use that specific pinch hitter? I wasn’t trying to second-guess like a fan, more like trying to trace the thinking behind it. It’s easy to yell at the TV, way harder to make the call yourself in the moment.
Putting Myself in the Shoes
So, I grabbed a notepad. Started jotting down some classic scenarios:
- Bases loaded, one out, tie game in the 8th. What do you do?
- Star player in a massive slump. Do you bench him? Drop him in the order?
- Bullpen’s tired after a long stretch. How do you manage those arms?
Honestly, just writing them down made me realize how many things are flying around. It’s not just about the single game sometimes, but how it fits into the whole week, the whole month.
I spent a good hour just playing out possibilities in my head. Tried to think about the clubhouse side too. Keeping all those high-paid stars happy, dealing with the media circus in New York. That’s a whole different ballgame right there.

Didn’t really come up with any genius answers or anything. That wasn’t the point. The exercise was just to appreciate the complexity. It’s a tough gig, probably one of the toughest in sports. You need thick skin, that’s for sure. Anyway, that was my little practice run for today, just trying to understand that role a bit better. Felt like a good way to spend the afternoon.
