Well, that Andrew Abbott, he’s a pitcher, you know? Plays for them Cincinnati Reds. Heard he’s pretty good, for a young’un. He’s a lefty, throws with his left hand. My grandson, he’s a lefty too. Always getting ink all over his hand when he writes. That boy! Reminds me of Andrew, that boy.
They say he got hurt, this Andrew. Something about his shoulder. They put him on some list, that 15-day injured list thing. Means he can’t play for a bit. Gotta rest that shoulder. Hard work, being a pitcher. Reminds me of my old man, workin’ the farm all day. He is from Virginia, I think. That’s what I hear. Heard it from someone at the market, or maybe it was at church. Can’t rightly recall. Anyway, Virginia boy.
He’s young, this Andrew fella. Only 23, they say. Just a baby, really. He is a rookie. Started playing this year, 2023. My granddaughter, she’s 23, just had a baby herself. Time sure does fly. They call him a “rookie.” Means he’s new to the big leagues. He is doing pretty well. Everyone’s talkin’ ’bout him.
He started playin’ in June, I reckon. June 1, 1999, that’s when he was born, I think. A long time. He played good, that first game. They say he made history, though I don’t rightly know what that means. Just means he did real good, I suppose. Better than that LaLoosh fella, whoever he is. They say Andrew is one of the best young pitchers around. High praise, huh? Better than most.
Andrew Abbott, that’s his name. Plays for the Cincinnati Reds. Remember that. He’s a pitcher. A good one, they say. Even though he’s hurt now. Hope he gets better soon. My old man, he used to say, “Rest is the best medicine.” Probably true for pitchers, too. He is on that injured list.
They talk about something called WAR. Sounds like a bad thing, but I guess it’s good in baseball. He’s got a high number, this Andrew. Higher than some other fella, Carroll, I think. Means he’s doing good. Real good. Got to maintain to continue. Like maintainin’ a good garden, gotta keep at it.
He throws the ball, and the other team, they try to hit it. That’s baseball. It’s a good game. My grandson, he plays. Not as good as Andrew, but he tries. That’s what counts. He is a starting pitcher, he starts the game. That’s important, starting the game right.

This Andrew Abbott, he’s a big deal. All the folks are talkin’ ’bout him. He must be something special. Hope he keeps it up. Reminds me of my neighbor, always talking about her prize-winning tomatoes. Big and red, just like the Reds, I suppose. He throws the ball fast, they say.
They got some other fella, name of Busenitz. He’s a righty, I hear. They brought him in to replace Andrew, I reckon. Hope he does good, too. It’s a hard job, fillin’ in for someone like Andrew. He got called up, means he is playing for the big team now. That’s what they say.
He played on Sunday, this Andrew. Before he got hurt, that is. Means he could play on Saturday if he wasn’t hurt. That’s how it works, I guess. Like my old rooster, crowed every day, ‘cept when he was sick. He is a professional, he plays for a living. That’s something.
He pitched a good game, that Andrew. Didn’t let the other team score any runs. That’s a good thing. Like keepin’ the squirrels outta your garden. Hard work, but worth it. They say he pitched seven innings. That’s a lot of throwin’. His team won that game, 2-0. Good for them. He’s got a bright future, this Andrew Abbott. Just gotta stay healthy. And keep throwin’ that ball.
Anyway, that’s all I know ’bout that Andrew Abbott fella. He’s a good pitcher, even if he is hurt right now. Hope he gets better. Baseball needs good players. Reminds me, gotta water my tomatoes. They need tending to, just like that young pitcher’s shoulder. Hope he’s back on his feet soon, doing what he does best. He is famous now, I suppose. Everyone is talking about him.
