Alright guys, so today I’m gonna walk you through my latest little project: a number 6 football jersey. Sounds simple, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey.

It all started with my son. He’s obsessed with this one football player who wears number 6, and he’s been bugging me for ages to get him a jersey. Now, I could’ve just gone to the store and bought one, but where’s the fun in that? I figured, why not try making it myself? Plus, it would be way cheaper.
First thing I did was hit up the local fabric store. I spent a good hour just trying to find the right shade of blue. I wanted it to be as close to the real jersey as possible. Finally, I settled on something that looked pretty decent. Grabbed some white fabric for the numbers and letters, and some thread. Basically cleaned out that area of the store.
Next up, the pattern. I’m no pro tailor, so I had to scrounge around online for a free jersey pattern. Found one that looked simple enough to follow, downloaded it, and printed it out. Then came the fun part: cutting out the fabric. Let me tell you, cutting fabric is harder than it looks! Especially when you’re trying to follow a pattern that keeps shifting around.
Once I had all the pieces cut, it was time to break out the sewing machine. Now, I haven’t used my sewing machine in ages, so I had to dust it off and remember how to thread it. After a few false starts and some tangled thread, I finally got the hang of it again. I started sewing the front and back pieces together, following the pattern as closely as I could. The sleeves were a bit tricky, but I managed to get them on without too much trouble.
The real challenge came with the number 6. I decided to go with appliqué, which basically means cutting out the numbers from the white fabric and sewing them onto the jersey. I printed out a large number 6, traced it onto the fabric, and carefully cut it out. Then, I pinned it onto the back of the jersey and started sewing around the edges. This took forever! My hand was cramping up like crazy, but I was determined to finish it.

Finally, after hours of sewing, the number 6 was on! It wasn’t perfect, but it looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. I added the player’s name on the back using the same appliqué method, and then sewed on some white stripes on the sleeves to complete the look.
The last step was to iron out all the wrinkles and loose threads. I gave it a good press, and then held it up to admire my work. It wasn’t exactly professional quality, but it was definitely passable. Plus, it was made with love, which is what really matters.
When my son saw it, his eyes lit up. He was so excited to try it on! It fit him perfectly, and he ran around the house pretending to be his favorite player. Seeing his reaction made all the hard work worth it. Even if it was a bit rough around the edges, it was a homemade jersey, and that made it special.
So, yeah, that’s the story of how I made a number 6 football jersey. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, I got to make my son really happy. What more could you ask for?
- Finding the right fabric.
- Figuring out the pattern.
- Sewing everything together.
- The appliquéing. Oh god, the appliquéing!
Would I do it again? Maybe! But next time, I might just buy a jersey from the store.
